Notes on the Exhibition

At a time when isolation and distance in multiple forms became necessary facts of life, Witness Marks imagines a visual conversation about human presence and transience that spoke to a lingering feeling of no longer belonging in a place you once called home.

Originally begun in 2018, the advent of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 spurred an evolution of this project, causing me to reconsider my relationship to my home environment. Text and everyday objects became opportunities to comment not only on my internal state, but also on the confusion and distress that most of us were feeling. Photographing ephemeral moments of human existence throughout the pandemic was an act of belief on my part that I could eventually feel at home in the world again.

Related Educational Programming

Artist Jane Alden Stevens welcomes the opportunity to discuss her work and the ideas and concepts she explores with the community at each participating venue. As a teacher and an engaging public speaker, she is well-practiced in talking with audiences of all ages and backgrounds about her artistic practice, the subjects she examines, and techniques.

Discussion topics can include the definition of “family”; rites of passage for teens, young adults, and parents; the interaction between photographs and memory; the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on individuals and photography; how individuals deal with the fact of aging; digital and traditional technical approaches; and the creative process of long-term projects.

Gallery Talks
Gallery talks can be given formally in a lecture-followed-by-Q&A format, or informally, with the artist inviting the audience to ask questions in order to foster a dialogue among all present. The latter approach has proven to be particularly effective with K-12 and college student groups.

Lectures
Lectures at universities, K-12 schools, historical groups, community centers, and other public or private venues can be tailored to those interested in sociology, psychology, history, fine arts, photography, and the liberal arts. The artist will accommodate time for Q&A during or following the presentation.
